Miss Ash’s story!

Tuesday 11th Feb
Miss Ash is the proud mother of Ryley, a sweet-natured 6-year-old boy who has just embarked on his journey into Year 1 at school. Back in 2021, Ryley began to experience what she initially believed were typical “daydreaming” episodes common for a child of his age. However, these fleeting moments gradually extended into longer intervals where Ryley would seem lost in thought, failing to respond even when his name was called.

Soon, these episodes escalated, culminating in Ryley’s entire body “freezing.” During these episodes, he would occasionally drop items he was holding, struggle to swallow his food, or even topple off his chair at daycare. Each occurrence seemed to amplify in intensity and duration. Concerned for her son, Miss Ash sought medical help, leading to an EEG at Westmead Children’s Hospital, which confirmed the presence of seizure activity and resulted in a diagnosis of Absence Epilepsy. Ryley was experiencing multiple seizures on a daily basis.

Since receiving his diagnosis, Ryley has been on a regimen of medication that has effectively managed his seizures. As he continues to grow, adjustments to his medication will be necessary, alongside annual EEGs to keep a close watch on his condition. The impact of these seizures has been significant, and it became evident that Ryley’s speech had regressed.

Today, Ryley is actively engaged in various therapies designed to support his development and help him thrive. He possesses a remarkable awareness of his Epilepsy and takes pride in identifying himself as an Epilepsy warrior, showcasing resilience and courage in the face of his challenges.
